Default seat replacements

I have a '78 scout II. It has bucket seats, which need to be replaced. Any advice on where to go or who to contact to remedy this?

I don't know if you can still get the same material, but you can get the seats reupholstered for about 100-150 bucks each with good material. Unless they are high backed seats, I wouldn't do that.

Anything salvaged at this point is unlikely to be in good enough shape to not need rework or else it's already been done.

Many people use seats from other vehicles. The target for the seat cushion is about 14 inches from the floor. There are many from which to choose, but you may end up using different runners and removing the current brackets.

It's not a hard project if you think it through. My favorite is to make a wooden box (carpeted, of course) of the right height and depth to install a seat from another vehicle, preferably an electric one with a heater, and then use the box as a subwoofer cabinet. Earthquake makes a very low profile 8 and 10 inch sub that is perfect for the application. Speaker placement then becomes much easier because you don't have to have large speakers to get the rest of the sound.

I took some low back buckets out of a '73 SII worked great and were cheap to reupholster. If you want newer seats I'm 99% sure you can swap in seats from an 84 or 85 Pontiac Fiero (dont hold me to the years but Ive seen it done with relative ease)

Don't have any pictures to post, but if you look at the bucket seats on a scout, you will see how to do it. There are pedestals on which the seats are mounted. The runners are mounted to the top.

Lucky for you, AZ IH guy has lots of pics of his stuff, and besides, he does better work than me.

If you use a seat that is set up this way, the runners might not be in the same place. Obviously, you have to use the runners that go with the seats.

They either fit or they don't. You have to measure and decide how to make them fit. Making a bracket is the easiest way. Then you bolt the bracket to the floor.

You just have to make sure the seats aren't too big to fit. After that, it's just work and ingenuity.

4runner seats work pretty good and you can keep the runners. You just have to make some brackets. They kick forward really far to access the back seat and fully recline too. I like the wood box idea with a sub in it. Brilliant.

(falls on ground laughing) Yes, I do have pictures and I'll post them tonight, but no haha I don't do great work at all, most of the time its guess and check, and i can't tell you how much trouble that'll get you in! Most of the stuff done on mine is done through the assistance of my grandfather who has owned IH since the sixties, I've got a lot to learn, but yes, pictures to come!! or if you want to see some very low quality pictures here's a link http://www.anythingscout.com/fleet/vehicle/1259/show

Check out Bestop's Line of Jeep Seats! They are high quality replacements that need very little fabrication to install in any Scout or Scout II. Certain Scoutparts web sites have theses seat priced WAY to high. Check out
4WD.com! I got 2 new COMPLETE Bestop seats for my scout for less than $300 bucks! Although mine are the cheaper, classic low-back style, they have some very nice full size seats as well and offer both vinyl and cloth and I think they even have a hybrid vinyl/cloth model.
